Water is indispensable for human survival. Allah the Almighty asserts the importance of water saying: “And we made every living thing of water” (Qur’an 21:30). Access to safe and clean water is an absolute necessity for everyone and taking the noble initiative of ensuring the rural households and folks have unlimited access to this Allah’s given precious commodity is an effort that is of high dignity and attracts tremendous rewards from our creator.” Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said: “Whoever digs a well, no thirsty soul will drink from it whether it be a human, jinn or bird, except that Allah will reward him on the day of Judgement.” Charity is not only in “how much you spend” or “how much you donate”. People in the folds of Islam are blessed in every way possible and are rewarded even for giving out greetings. Therefore, offering water for others to drink is the best form of charity and is a means of forgiveness of sins.

Ummah Foundation in its efforts to curb the crunch has sank boreholes in several villages across Kenya and beyond that are benefitting more than 3 million residents in those particular locations and other neighboring villages. One main focus has been employing longer-term solutions that can help communities plan and respond better to future predicaments, cushioning them from future shocks.  In 2015, Ummah Foundation in partnership with Central South Hall Mosque of the UK, sank a very enabling water project that has left long-lasting effects in Merti in Isiolo County and in 2019, we did the same in Shimba Hills in Mwenyemkuu village in Kwale County that has changed the lives of inhabitants in those regions. We have been doing this as a response to current and future threats of climate change on food security which requires robust adaptation options that can allow for certainty in agriculture through sinking boreholes for daily use and irrigation.

Similarly, Ummah Foundation has recently finished sinking another borehole in Goshi Village that is providing clean safe water for nearly 129,000 people in Kilifi North Sub County which will increase people’s accessibility to clean water. At Ummah Foundation we recognize the fact that it is more impactful to focus on long-term approaches in solving challenges so that when a crisis like drought and famine happens, there are solid systems that sustain communities throughout a crisis and beyond. These water and sanitation projects are designed to ensure food and water security in most affected areas.

It is our ardent appeal to all interested donors of goodwill to team up with Ummah Foundation to bring drastic changes in these poverty-ravaged areas that have been relegated to fate.
